What happens if talks between the U.S. and North Korea fail to secure tangible results?

Earlier in the month U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Begun delivered a lecture at the University of Michigan in which he offered his own prediction, saying that if negotiations with North Korea fail, South Korea and Japan may demand nuclear armament.

These demands, he suggested, would be justifiable from the U.S.’s point of view. Quoting Henry Kissinger’s old warning about the threat of a nuclear arms race in Asia, Biegun said: “At some point there will be voices in South Korea, Japan and other Asian
