On February 22 in Madrid we saw the first act of violent resistance against the North Korean government in many decades – or, at least, an event which could be understood as such.

Indeed, it is not clear to what extent the violent attack on the DPRK embassy in Madrid, which reportedly left several diplomats wounded, can be described as an authentic act of domestic political resistance.

The group behind the attack is headedby an overseas Korean who has spent most of his life overseas. It appears possible that some of the militants are indeed of North Korean origin,
