A senior colonel of North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau defected to South Korea last year, South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense revealed Monday.

A spokesperson for the MND confirmed the defection in a press briefing in Seoul, but said they could not reveal personal information or concrete details. The spokesperson also could not reveal the time and method of the defection.

The MND confirmed that the former Reconnaissance General Bureau officer was involved in operations against South Korea, but could not reveal any further details about the nature of the defected officer’s work.
