Expansion of China-N.Korean SEZs suggests Beijing-Pyongyang relations not declining, report says

A report by a former minister of unification suggests that South Korea may need to be more proactive in economic cooperation with the North due to expanding China-NK cooperation.

Lee Jong-suk, who was unification minister from February to December 2006, released his report analyzing recent signs of expansion of economic cooperation between China and North Korea.

“The Chinese government has carried out its plans to build the new Yalu river bridge between China and North Korea,” he wrote in the report.

“The special economic zone (SEZ) in Hwanggumpyong, North Korea is also close to completion.”
