N.Korea extending maternity leave – KCNA

Expansions of rights for women, other disadvantaged groups maybe meant to deflect human rights criticism

North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Wednesday announced the revision of its law on maternity leave, complete with a 90-day extension.

Under the revisions, maternity leave will be expanded from 150 days to 240 days, including 60 days before childbirth and 180 days after.

The Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK made the decision, and North Korean experts quoted by the KCNA said it will improve women’s social benefits.

A 240-day leave may be considered quite long; maternity leave in South Korea is 90 days, for example.
