A Japanese woman kidnapped in 1977 by North Korean agents died in 1994 from a drug overdose, a South Korean newspaper said.

Megumi Yokota, abducted at age 13, overdosed on sedatives and sleeping pills at a psychiatric ward, the Dong-a Ilbo reported.

Yokota’s death was revealed in a Japanese government report, based on interviews with North Korean staff of the hospital where she died, the paper said, and the Japanese government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been briefed on the details.
