A North Korean official’s public discussion of “detention centers” attracted attention Tuesday, but did not actually include an admission of a nationwide system of political prison camps.

North Korean foreign ministry official Choe Myong Nam on Tuesday mentioned “reform through labor” facilities, which he at first referred to as “detention camps” before correcting himself, describing them as “detention centers” instead.

Though the initial Associated Press report described it as the North’s first admission of its labor camps, it has since been modified its original headline to reflect that Choe merely mentioned the labor facilities.
