North Korean rights activist wins congressional primary

Suzanne Scholte will seek to unseat Democratic incumbent in fall general election

An activist for North Korean human rights has won the Republican nomination for U.S. Congress in Virginia, and will face the Democratic nominee in the fall.

Suzanne Scholte, president of the Defense Forum Foundation and vice-chair of the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, overcame her opponents in the Republican primary for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. District Republicans selected Scholte by acclimation on the first ballot at their convention, which took place Saturday in the Virginian city of Springfield.

Scholte has largely campaigned thus far on reforming the Affordable Care Act, the signature legislation of President Barack Obama,
