North Korea pledges to plant over 1 billion trees by next decade

The DPRK launched its first reforestation project in 2015, after which it claimed to have planted over 5.7 billion trees

North Korea has pledged to plant more than 1.1 billion trees over the next decade under a new phase of its nationwide reforestation campaign, according to the country’s statement submitted during an annual U.N. climate conference in Mongolia.

Starting this year, the second phase of North Korea’s Forest Restoration Project will run for 10 years, according to a Pyongyang delegation’s statement to the U.N. Convention to Combat Desertification’s Conference of the Parties.

The DPRK will “enhance national forest fire monitoring capabilities,” establish plans to prevent forest pests and diseases and present environmental protection as a nationwide “patriotic endeavor” under leader
