A potential U.S.-DPRK summit this year has emerged as a new focus in the relationship, with President Donald Trump stepping up overtures to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un while Pyongyang raises the bar for renewed engagement.

Trump said Wednesday that he plans to meet Kim later this year, despite North Korea giving little indication that it shares his itinerary and enthusiasm. 

His remarks follow The Wall Street Journal reporting that he pressed aides to arrange a meeting “as soon as this fall,” potentially during his expected November trip to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China’s Shenzhen.
