News Think tank raises estimate for North Korean nuclear arsenal to 60 warheadsDPRK also has enough fissile material for at least 90 warheads, Stockholm institute finds
North Korea has expanded its nuclear arsenal to around 60 warheads, according to a new estimate from a Stockholm-based think tank, a 20% increase from its previous assessments. As of last January, the DPRK “had probably assembled around 60 warheads and possessed enough fissile material to potentially produce at least 90 warheads,” the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reported in its 2026 yearbook released on Sunday. “Of these, it is likely that nearly all would be lower-yield single-stage fission warheads and only a few would be thermonuclear warheads,” it added. The assessment marks an increase from SIPRI’s 2025 and © Korea Risk Group. All rights reserved. |
