North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw an artillery firing contest on the birth anniversary of the country’s founder on Wednesday, deviating from his practice in recent years of unveiling ambitious construction projects on the country’s most important holiday.

On the Day of the Sun — founding leader Kim Il Sung’s birth anniversary — Kim Jong Un attended a competition among artillery sub-units of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) Western Front, the ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun reported Thursday.
