News North Korean crops held strong through winter before lean period: reportWinter crops are a crucial source of food for North Koreans during the lean period from May to August
North Korea’s winter crops have benefitted from favorable weather, a U.N. report found, leaving the country well positioned for the annual lean period amid persistent food insecurity concerns. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) concluded in a report published Tuesday that North Korea saw “generally favorable” weather conditions between October to February, which allowed for “sowing operations and [supported] satisfactory crop germination and establishment.” Citing satellite imagery, the organization found that snow cover between December and February was “generally sufficient” across main breadbasket regions, “providing adequate protection to dormant crops against freezing temperatures.” © Korea Risk Group.
