New Zealand has deployed a long-range patrol aircraft to monitor North Korea’s illicit ship-to-ship transfers aimed at circumventing U.N. Security Council (UNSC) sanctions, Japan’s foreign ministry announced Wednesday.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) P-8A Poseidon aircraft will operate out of Japan’s Kadena Air Base from late March to mid-April, the ministry said in a press release.

This marks the ninth time the RNZAF has contributed to monitoring the DPRK’s illegal maritime activities since 2018, with the most recent aerial deployment in November. New Zealand’s navy has also dispatched ships to track North Korean ship-to-ship transfers twice.
