ROK issues flood alert after North Korea releases water from upstream dam

Authorities say water levels rose to dangerous heights following DPRK’s unannounced discharge into Imjin River

South Korea issued an emergency flood evacuation alert for an inter-Korean border area late Tuesday following North Korea’s presumed release of water from a nearby dam.

According to the Han River Flood Control Office, the water level at Pilseung Bridge in Yeoncheon County exceeded 1 meter at 11 p.m. on Tuesday and gradually rose to about 1.4 meters, currently holding at that level as of Wednesday morning.

Gyeonggi Provincial Office sent an emergency alert to Yeoncheon residents at 11:08 p.m., according to a county official, since the level exceeded the warning threshold of 1 meter.
