Legal and political hurdles have clouded fate of DPRK soldiers captured by Ukraine, complicating any transfer to ROK

A North Korean prisoner of war (POW) taken by Ukraine has expressed a desire to resettle in the South rather than be repatriated to his home country, where he could face punishment for his capture. 

The only problem is international humanitarian law could stand in the way.

Ukrainian forces captured two DPRK soldiers in Russia’s Kursk region in January, and when one suggested he wanted to defect, Seoul declared its willingness to take him in to ensure he does not face “persecution” back home.
