The buzz around North Korea in 2024 centered on its military ties with Russia, in particular its involvement in Ukraine, but a number of other developments that flew under the radar could end up having a bigger impact on the direction it takes in the new year.

Perhaps the most neglected area was the domestic economy, as the North Korean won plummeted to record lows and livelihood costs increased, increasing pressure on the regime to prove that it can provide for its people’s basic needs.

Another major development was the DPRK military’s increased activity in the DMZ, including the demolition
