A South Korean national residing in Australia reunited with family members in North Korea in October, the first such meeting in five years, Seoul’s unification ministry confirmed on Tuesday.

The ministry did not reveal the name of the person, but confirmed that they are in their 80s and that the visit was privately brokered. The individual reportedly met two nephews in the DPRK. 

It’s unclear how the reunion was planned or how long the South Korean national was able to stay in North Korea. The DPRK has kept its border shut in recent years to most visitors, especially ROK citizens.
