North Korean delegation joins COP29 climate talks in Azerbaijan

Participation shows DPRK’s willingness to engage on environmental issues despite limiting diplomacy since pandemic

North Korea has sent a delegation to the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) climate summit that kicked off in Azerbaijan on Monday, highlighting its openness to global engagement on environmental issues even as it restricts broader diplomacy to its closest partners.

A livestream of Thursday’s opening plenum briefly showed two DPRK representatives in the audience, and an official photo revealed the pair was seated a few rows behind the host country’s delegation.
