Two French software developers behind the widely used VLC media player say they launched balloons carrying movies and TV series toward North Korea last week, despite local authorities’ efforts to crack down on such activity amid heightened inter-Korean tensions.

In an email to NK News, Julien Navas of VideoLAN framed the launch of balloons shaped like traffic cones — the logo of the open-source software — as a protest against the Kim regime’s censorship.

“It was important for us to send balloons loaded with USB keys containing thousands of films, series and our militant video player,” said Navas,
