North Korea marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties with China on Sunday without hosting any major celebrations, in a sign that Pyongyang’s relationship with its biggest economic benefactor has sunk to a nadir as it focuses on military cooperation with Russia.

Both DPRK and Chinese state media had not reported on any events to celebrate the anniversary as of Monday afternoon, despite previously declaring 2024 the “year of China-DPRK friendship.”

Reports that the two countries would finally open the cross-border New Yalu River Bridge, first completed in 2014, to mark the occasion also did not come to pass
