The Russian Air Force Tu-214PU-SBUS, tail number RA-64530, departed from St. Petersburg around 12:30 a.m. KST and touched down in Pyongyang around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the Flightradar24 aviation tracking service. A Russian military command and control aircraft flew directly to North Korea from St. Petersburg on Friday, aviation data shows, a rare flight route that one expert said suggests the visit is tied to Vladimir Putin’s recent activities in the city.

The Russian Air Force Tu-214PU-SBUS, tail number RA-64530, departed from St. Petersburg around 12:30 a.m. KST and touched down in Pyongyang around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the Flightradar24 aviation tracking service.

The jet is a modificationof the Tu-214 equipped with an SBUS-214 special on-board communication unit, allowing the aircraft to operate as a flying command post.
