U.S. and South Korean marines will train how to launch a counter-invasion if North Korea attacks, as part of a large-scale joint amphibious exercise that kicked off on Monday.

The Ssangyong 2024, or “double dragon,” drills will run from Aug. 26 to Sept. 7 on South Korea’s east coast and near the southeastern city of Pohang, the ROK navy and marines announced in a press release on Sunday.

The training is part of the allies’ ongoing summertime Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) drills and is aimed at “enhancing combat readiness and interoperability between the two allies,” according to the press release.
