The U.N. has named a new resident coordinator to oversee the operations of its humanitarian and development organizations in North Korea, though the country’s border controls mean he is currently unable to work from Pyongyang.

According to a U.N. statement, long-time U.N. official Joe Colombano of Italy assumed the position of resident coordinator on Friday “with the host Government’s approval.”

“In his new role, he will support the DPRK’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, leading the U.N. team’s efforts, including Food and Nutrition Security, Social Development Services, Resilience and Sustainability, as well as Data and Development Management,”
