North Korea blew past a U.N.-imposed cap on oil imports last year, smuggling in up to three times the allowed volume in defiance of international sanctions, according to a new assessment by U.N. member states. A total of 55 countries have assessed that DPRK tankers delivered refined oil products to North Korea at least 87 times between Jan. 1 and Sept. 15, 2023, the latest U.N. Panel of Experts report states. The vessels could have smuggled up to 1,523,381 barrels of unreported refined petroleum products into the country if carrying 90% of their capacity, according to the member states’ estimates © Korea Risk Group.
