North Korea touts new ice skating rink in Pyongyang in push to provide amenities

Expert says temporary rink is way for regime to keep ‘core constituency’ happy, while those in other areas go without

Residents of North Korea’s capital will be able glide and twirl across the ice at a new outdoor rink this winter, though such opportunities likely won’t be available to most of the country’s people.

North Korea’s party daily boasted of the opening of the temporary ice rink in Pyongyang in a report on Thursday, with one expert telling NK News that it is a low-cost way for leader Kim Jong Un to keep his “core constituency” happy.
