North Korea invites Chinese delegation, first foreign visit since pandemic began

State media announces visit for Korean War anniversary in significant development for DPRK’s COVID border controls

A Chinese delegation will visit North Korea to participate in celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War this week, state media announced Monday, in what would be the first-known visit by a foreign delegation since the start of the pandemic.

The party and government delegation led by Chinese politburo member Li Hongzhong will travel to the DPRK at the invitation of the Workers’ Party of Korea “to take part in the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the victory in the great Fatherland Liberation War,” the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported in a one-sentence article, using North Korea’s official name for the Korean War.
