U.S. President Joe Bien called out “cruel” and “inhumane” punishments by the North Korean government on Monday, in a statement to mark the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

The DPRK was one of just three countries that Biden criticized in the statement, along with Russia and Syria.

“In North Korea, there are widespread credible reports of torture and other forms of cruel, inhumane, and degrading punishment by the government, including in political prison camps, and against women specifically, such as sexual violence, forced abortion and forced sterilization,” Biden said.
