1 in 10 North Koreans faces modern slavery, highest prevalence in world: Report

Global Slavery Index finds DPRK to blame for forced labor, human trafficking and other constraints on individual freedom

North Korea has the highest prevalence of modern slavery of any country, with forced labor, human trafficking and other activities impinging on the freedom of millions of citizens, according to a new report.

The 2023 edition of the Global Slavery Index by Walk Free, an Australian human rights organization, placed the DPRK behind Eritrea and Mauritania at the bottom of its latest ranking. DPRK also occupied the lowest position in the 2018 edition of the index.
