US lists North Korea as state sponsor of terrorism for fifth straight year

State Department cites abductions of Japanese and assassinations on foreign soil as evidence of DPRK link to terrorism

North Korea is a state sponsor of terrorism, the U.S. has concluded, marking the fifth straight year that the DPRK has found itself on the State Department’s Country Report on Terrorism.

The department published the updated list on Monday for the year 2021. Countries designated by the U.S. as state sponsors of terrorism face unilateral sanctions such as restrictions on “U.S. foreign assistance, a ban on defense exports and sales, certain controls over exports of dual use items, and miscellaneous financial and other restrictions.”
