The U.S. and South Korea are devising plans for how to respond if North Korea uses nuclear weapons, the White House said Tuesday, following conflicting accounts of whether the allies are exploring “joint nuclear exercises.”

The comments sought to provide clarification after presidents Joe Biden and Yoon Suk-yeol appeared to contradict each other in separate statements on the issue.

“Following their meeting in Cambodia[last November], President Biden and President Yoon tasked their teams to plan for an effective, a coordinated response to a range of scenarios, including nuclear use by North Korea,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said
