No need for full-time North Korea envoy without ‘active diplomacy,’ US says

State Department reiterates willingness to engage with Pyongyang on denuclearization but says DPRK remains unresponsive

The U.S. does not need to nominate a full-time North Korea pointperson in the absence of “active diplomacy” with Pyongyang, the State Department said Tuesday, a day after the White House nominated a new special envoy on DPRK human rights.

Department spokesperson Ned Price said Sung Kim, the U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia who handles the DPRK portfolio on an irregular basis, is doing a “tremendous job” under the current circumstances.
