European Council renews human rights sanctions on top North Korean officials

Expert says move unlikely to improve situation on the ground but sends important message to Pyongyang

The European Council (EC) renewed sanctions against two high-ranking North Korean officials and the country’s prosecutors office for their alleged complicity in human rights abuses, the body announced Monday.

North Korean Minister of Social Security Ri Yong Gil, Minister of State Security Jong Kyong Thaek and North Korea’s Central Public Prosecutor’s Office were all kept on the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime list for a second consecutive year.
