A Taiwanese court sentenced a local businessman to a year behind bars on Thursday for smuggling thousands of tons of oil into North Korea.

According to a Kaohsiung court press release, Huang Wang Ken (黄旺根) confessed to moving 3,000 tons of refined petroleum into North Korea across several shipments in 2018.

“Huang Wanggen, in pursuit of personal gain, transferred oil on the high seas twice to North Korean ships on the [U.N.] sanctions list,” the court said, calling them crimes that “seriously damaged” Taiwan’s image on the international stage.
