North Korea opens floodgates near border as typhoon barrels toward peninsula

Seoul says Pyongyang did not provide advance notice despite risk of flooding to residents in inter-Korean border area

The DPRK opened floodgates along a river connecting the two Koreas over the weekend, South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) confirmed to NK News Monday, sparking concerns of flash flooding near the inter-Korean border as a major storm makes landfall on the peninsula. 

Meteorologists have warned that Typhoon Hinnamnor is the strongest tropical storm on Earth this year and could dump as much as 12 inches (305 mm) of water on the two Koreas in the coming days.
