North Korea completes hydroelectric power project, 41 years after announcing it

Final stage of Orangchon Power Station large by DPRK standards but won’t solve country’s energy problems, expert says

North Korean workers have finished construction on the final stage of a hydroelectric power project in the country’s northernmost province, state media reported Friday, 41 years after DPRK founding leader Kim Il Sung first announced the undertaking.

But an expert on the DPRK’s power sector said the new dam will be insufficient on its own to address the country’s significant energy needs.

According to the Rodong Sinmun, authorities held a completion ceremony on Thursday for the third power plant in the Orangchon Power Station, a network of dams aimed at supplying power to North Hamgyong province.
