New US ambassador to South Korea to arrive in Seoul next month: Source

Phillip Goldberg, who is scheduled to land on July 10, has stressed need to push for North Korea’s denuclearization

The new U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip Goldberg will arrive in Seoul early next month, an informed source told NK News on Thursday, filling a more than yearlong vacancy as Washington seeks both new sanctions on North Korea and talks with Pyongyang.

The former coordinator for U.N. sanctions on North Korea is scheduled to land in South Korea on July 10, the source said, confirming a Hankook-ilbo report. The White House announced that it had nominated Goldberg to the role in February, and he has already been sworn in as ambassador at the State Department, according to a tweet posted by the U.S. Embassy in Seoul earlier this month.
