A group that advocates for North Korean defectors has demanded prosecutors take action against a company that allegedly scammed over 300 defectors in a pyramid scheme.

Representatives for victims of the scam made their plea at a press conference at South Korea’s National Assembly on Thursday, where they expressed frustration with the lack of a legal response against the perpetrators. 

According to victim advocate Lee Nagyeong, hundreds of vulnerable defectors — mainly single parents, the disabled and the elderly — have been duped for over 7 billion won ($5.5 million).
