Chinese diplomat keeps up active diplomacy on North Korea after ICBM test

Liu Xiaoming’s meeting with Sung Kim part of effort to manage tensions due to national security concerns, expert says

Top U.S. and Chinese diplomats met on Tuesday to discuss “recent developments” related to North Korea, according to the State Department, as Beijing conducts active diplomacy following Pyongyang’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) last month.

U.S. Special Representative for the DPRK Sung Kim condemns North Korea’s “increasingly escalatory actions” in his meeting with Chinese counterpart Liu Xiaoming, during which they discussed ways to “encourage the DPRK to engage in meaningful negotiations” and advance the two countries’ shared goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, the State Department announced Tuesday.
