US pursues new sanctions as Security Council fails to condemn DPRK missile test

Unclear if North Korea will face UN penalties for intercontinental ballistic missile test as China, Russia blame US

The U.S. will propose new international sanctions against North Korea for its recent test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Washington’s ambassador to the U.N. said on Friday, but any new measures appear likely to face stiff resistance from China and Russia.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced the upcoming move at an emergency U.N. Security Council (UNSC) meeting called after Pyongyang claimed it tested its largest-ever ICBM, the Hwasong-17, on Thursday.
