US presses China for ‘unified’ response to North Korean ICBM test

High-level diplomats discuss DPRK issues as two sides at loggerheads over merits of new sanctions

The U.S. hopes to work together with China at the U.N. Security Council (UNSC) to craft a “unified” response to recent North Korean ballistic missile launches, Washington’s U.N. ambassador told Beijing’s Korean Peninsula envoy on Wednesday.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield met with China’s Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming in New York days after China signaled it would not support efforts by the U.S. to expand UNSC sanctions in response to North Korea’s successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) last week.
