A future that never was: Madeleine Albright’s glimmer of hope with North Korea

Albright, who died on Wednesday at 84, met Kim Jong Il in 2000 when better bilateral relations seemed possible

Madeleine Albright, the first U.S. Secretary of State who met former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il as part of a fleeting high-level bilateral engagement that promised to take relations down a different path, died on Wednesday at the age of 84.

The first-ever woman to serve as Washington’s top diplomat, Albright was also the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit the DPRK until former President Donald Trump took a few steps across the inter-Korean border in June 2019.
