Former North Korea sanctions official tapped as US ambassador to Seoul: Source

Biden to nominate career diplomat Philip Goldberg to lead Seoul embassy in key post unfilled for over a year

U.S. President Joe Biden has chosen former coordinator for U.N. sanctions on North Korea Philip Goldberg to serve as the administration’s new ambassador to Seoul, an informed source confirmed to NK News on Wednesday.

If he receives Senate approval, Goldberg, a career diplomat currently serving as the U.S. ambassador to Colombia, will take over from Chargé d’Affaires Christopher Del Corso as head of mission in Seoul and fill a key vacancy that has existed since former Ambassador Harry Harris left his post in January last year. South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo reported on Wednesday that the Biden administration is currently undertaking “necessary procedures” for Goldberg’s nomination.
