White House says it favors ‘step-by-step’ approach to North Korea nuclear issue

Top official says Biden hopes to build on past presidents’ DPRK policies, while conceding lack of progress this year

The Biden administration is taking a “step-by-step” approach to the North Korea nuclear issue that straddles the line between Obama-era “strategic patience” and Donald Trump’s “grand bargain,” according to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

Sullivan did not clarify what shape or form this approach might take in his remarks last week, but South Korean President Moon Jae-in signaled his support for a “step-by-step” approach after the U.S.-ROK summit in May.
