Canadians to privately sponsor North Korean refugees under new program

Five defector families will resettle in Canada through partnership between human rights group and Canadian government

A Canadian human rights organization has announced a new program that will allow Canadians to privately sponsor North Korean refugees to help them to resettle in the country.

The new pilot program in partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will help five North Korean women and their families currently located in transit countries, according to HanVoice. The human rights organization said the program will make Canada the first country to accept North Korean refugees using private sponsorship.
