Germany wins sanctions exemption to send COVID test equipment to North Korea

UN grants 9-month window for ‘export of medical equipment for the prevention and control of COVID-19 in the DPRK’

The United Nations has granted a new sanctions exemption to Germany to send medical equipment to North Korea “for the prevention and control of COVID-19,” according to the U.N. website, with the planned shipment to take place “as soon as possible.”

The country will have until April 23, 2022 to deliver “six units of a Rotor-Disc 100 Starter Kit” to North Korea’s Ministry of Public Health, the U.N. Security Council’s (UNSC) 1718 sanctions committee said in a letter published on Wednesday. The Permanent Mission of Germany to the U.N. requested the exemption on July 16.
