China appoints new special representative for Korean Peninsula affairs

Liu Xiaoming — formerly an ambassador to the U.K., Egypt and North Korea — will now handle both Seoul and Pyongyang

China moved its former ambassador to the United Kingdom to a new role meant to oversee Korean Peninsula affairs, the country’s foreign ministry announced on Monday. 

Liu Xiaoming, who most recently served as China’s ambassador to the U.K. from 2010 to 2021, now works under the title of Beijing’s special representative for Korean Peninsula affairs.
