US officials’ trip to Seoul and Tokyo will inform North Korea policy review

U.S. secretary of state and secretary of defense will make their way to Asia next week

The White House’s new plan on North Korea is still a work in progress and will be informed by top officials’ upcoming trips to Seoul and Tokyo, a U.S. State Department spokesperson said on Friday.

Next week, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will make their first-ever trip to Asia in their new roles. Ned Price, a State Department spokesperson, called the visit a “key ingredient” to Washington’s policy review on North Korea, which could dictate how much of former President Donald Trump’s unconventional, diplomacy-driven approach will survive a White House audit.
