North Korea’s diplomats are moonlighting as arms smugglers abroad: Report

Former UN Panel of Experts member speaks out against slow and ineffective measures on North Korean arms smuggling

A former member of the U.N. Panel of Experts is speaking out about North Korean diplomats who are helping the DPRK smuggle weapons and is advocating for more oversight.

Hugh Griffiths, who left the U.N. Panel of Experts that oversees North Korean sanctions enforcement in late 2019, told NK News that North Korea’s diplomats are abusing their privileges and helping partner countries obtain arms. Griffiths’ new Small Arms Survey report, co-authored with senior researcher Matt Schroeder, outlines many examples of this happening and calls for a stronger crackdown on North Korean arms smuggling.
