A North Korean fisherman was sentenced to seven years of prison labor for his role in a Sept. 2019 assault of Russian border guards, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Friday.

The sentence is the most severe punishment doled out yet in an ongoing trial of 17 North Korean fishermen, who were arrested for allegedly assaulting Russian border officials during a poaching inspection.

Russian officials have so far implicated three fishermen — Hwang Yong Sik, Choe Son and Pak Myung Jin — presumably for taking on a more prominent role in resisting the arrest. One of the three
